Cyber crime refer to any criminal act dealing with computers and networks. Additionally cyber crime also refers to traditional crimes conducted through the internet. Examples of cyber crime includes internet fraud, identity theft and credit card account theft.
Online Fraud
An example of online fraud is phishing. Phishing is practically an online con game and phishers are nothing more than tech savvy con artists and identity thieves. They use spam, fake websites, crimeware and other techniques to trick people into giving them sensitive information such as bank and credit card account details. After they have gathered enough information, they would open up new accounts using the victim's name or they would drain the victim's bank account.
How phishing works
In most cases, phishers would send out a wave of spam emails sometimes up to millions of messages. Each email contains a message that appears to come from a well-known and trusted company. Usually the message includes the company's logo and name, and it often tries to evoke an emotional response to a false crisis. The email would often make a request of the user's personal information. Sometimes the email would direct the user to a fake website, the website would then require the user to provide confidential information such as passwords account number, etcs. About 1 to 10% of the recipients are duped.
Another example of online fraud is pharming. Pharming is very similar to phishing where pharmers also rely on fake websites and theft of confidential information to carry out online scams. However pharming is more difficult to detect in many ways because they are not reliant upon the victim receiving an email. Instead of relying on victim to click on the link in a fake email, pharming redirects victims to a fake website even if they type in the correct web address of their bank or other online service in their web browser. How to prevent online frauds?
One of the best ways to keep attackers away from your computer is to apply patches and other software fixes when they become available. By regularly updating your computer, you block attackers from being able to take advantage of software flaws that they could use to break into your system.
Another way is to make sure that you have configured your computer securely. A newly purchased computer may not have the right level of security for you. Configuring popular internet applications such as your web browser and email software is one of the most important areas to focus on. For example, settings in your Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox will determine what happens when you visit Web sites on the Internet, the strongest security settings will give you the most control over what happens online but may also frustrate some people with a large number of questions.
Choosing a strong password will also is also very important in keeping your online experience secure.
Discussion
So what are your opinions on online fraud?

Cyber crime is so common nowadays because it is hard to track. And some people are actually gullible enough to fall for it, i.e. becoming victims of it.
ReplyDeleteThus, caution when using new media.
I agree with Annwei, thus I dun put important information, especially bank account numbers which can be very dangerous if someone finds out. And also, using a good security software can also help to give information about the site, whether it's a real site or not.

Hi Weiren
ReplyDeleteThis is paranoia. I feel that people worry too much about getting cheated online. Basically, if you get scammed, or cheated online, it's your own fault. Thus, we should only buy things from reputable companies, and take pride in doing things as safely and as securely as possible. To be perfectly honest, it's very difficult to lose your bank account number, unless you enter it on a site that's fraudulent, or the company's main server gets hacked.

Hey Weiren,
ReplyDeleteYes, I had came across many online fraud websites be it when I am surfing the net or checking my emails. Its rather irritating though. The good thing is, personally for me, I find it easy to differentiate which is a fraud or not.
Also like what Mark pointed out, if we were to buy something on the net, do check first whether the the site is from a reputable company.

Hi Weiren,
ReplyDeleteI personally hate spam email, or viruses that cause me to spam others. I've met with some of these with my hotmail account, msn account, and my facebook account which really annoys me. I think these are just antics by really tech-savvy con artists that pose an inconvenience to new media users.
I don't really shop online much, so fraud doesn't really affect me, but the whole spam issue really gets to me whenever I get viruses or spam.

Hi Weiren,
ReplyDeleteI think above all the upgrades you can make to your computer's security, what's important is that you have to upgrade yourself.
Keep up to date with the latest scams, make sure you're on a reliable page before entering any information and be alert at all times, and I think you won't fall victim.
After all, the most effective cyber crimes aren't the ones that target weaknesses in firewalls and other computer weaknesses, but rather human error.

thank you everyone for commenting. Like what Shea had mentioned it is very important to upgrade yourself instead of just upgrading your computer. Like what the others had mentioned it is advisable to buy things online only from reputable companies and most importantly not to give any passwords to the others.
ReplyDeleteHi Weiren!
ReplyDeleteWow, interesting knowledge! To me, I think some common sense would help to avoid cases of phishing and pharming. What I mean by common sense is by not saving personal details on shared computers, or public computers etc.

Hi Weiren
ReplyDeletei think online fraud is one of the product of new media. When we benefit from new media, we also suffer from it. And it occurs because of those bad people.

Hi Weiren,
ReplyDeleteI think cyber crimes can comes under one of the crime that we should be cautious. It is a type of crime just like theft in the real world. Being cautious is the key to keep ourselves safe.
Cyber crime is more difficult to detect, as it is like a world wide issue.

Hi Weiren,
ReplyDeleteI think Cyber crime can be one of the dangerous crime because it can be widely spread around and like what Wei Chong said, cyber crime is more difficult to detect
Hi Weiren!
ReplyDeleteThanks for e sharing! I totally agree with mengying's statment. Online fraud is pretty irritating and not easy to tackle the problem. With some commonsense, I will not give away or save any personal information online.

Hi Weiren,
ReplyDeleteI think consistency is key to protecting yourself from cyber crimes - you need to constantly be in the loop of and equip yourself with the latest technology.
Another thing we should be consistent about is the changing of our passwords. Many people tend to stick to one particular password for all their accounts and for extended periods of time. By varying your password across accounts and frequently changing them, you'll continually throw online predators off your track.

Hello,
ReplyDeleteCyber crimes are pretty much inevitable as the New Media is such a powerful tool. But it can be prevented as long as one takes precautions when it comes to information he or she shares online.
I don't really care much for spamming because it just appears in my junk mail. Also, one should always be careful when it comes to opening files from unknown people as there may be a virus or bug in it. But I guess it's pretty easty to prevent that as long as one installs or gets some anti-virus software thingy.

Hi Weiren,
ReplyDeleteWith the convenience of the internet it's even more easy to let one's guard down. I agree with others that we should take our own protective measures against cyber crime.
I also think it's very important that we educate our children about cybercrime, especially since they are growing up in the technological age.
